Lot 3644
1796 S-108 R4. Draped Bust. Sharpness VF20 but covered with fine granularity under a dull dark olive and steel patina. There are traces of shallow verdigris in a couple of the protected areas. The only mark is a planchet void at the dentils over ER in AMERICA, and this void reaches down into the tops of those letters. In spite of this void, the planchet weighs a heavy 13.41 grams (207 grains) versus the thin planchet standard of 168 grains adopted in 1795. This cent appears to have been struck on a planchet made to the old 208 grain standard. Unfortunately, the slab prohibits checking the edge to look for edge lettering, which (if present) would be a significant discovery. We just have to assume the edge is plain. The date and legends are complete and clear.

Otherwise the surfaces are decent with only traces of extremely faint roughness hidden under a glossy dark olive and steel patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of chocolate brown. Possibly retoned long ago, but the eye appeal is decent in spite of the defects. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state IV. The date is bold and the legends are strong. A variety that's easier to find in mint state than mid-grades thanks to the Nichols Hoard.

Specks of greenish verdigris show in a few of the rough areas, but overall the surfaces are reasonably smooth. Slightly glossy reddish steel and chocolate. LDS with a slightly raised retained cud break between the cracks over the E in AMERICA. This cent shows a strong impression of a misplaced planchet cutter punched deeply into the planchet. This errant impression is located in the field behind the portrait and at the opposing area along the left side of the reverse. A rare type of early mint error, far rarer than an off-center or double strike error. 1798 S-179 R2 Boldly Double Struck Off Center. Good-6. Style II Hair with Small 8. Sharpness near F12 but covered with fine to moderate roughness under a slightly glossy dark olive and steel patina. No notable contact marks or verdigris. Double struck. The first strike was normal but the planchet failed to eject completely and a second strike 70% off center to K-3 left the 1 and some of the lower curls of the second strike in the field before the portrait of the first strike. The reverse, however, was struck against the obverse of a previously struck cent leaving an incuse impression of LI (from LIBERTY) right of the T in CENT. This brockage impression does not line up with the obverse impression left by the off-center strike suggesting things were really jammed up at this point. An impressive multiple mint error (double strike, off center, obverse brockage). The date and legends are clear for what remains of the initial strike.
